I have been a victim of an assault. What happens now?

Applications for criminal injuries compensation are governed by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003. Currently, the maximum that may be awarded to a victim of a single offence is $75,000.00.

To be successful in your criminal injuries compensation claim, an Assessor of Criminal Injuries must be satisfied that you have or are still suffering an injury as a consequence of the commission of an offence committed against you.

Medical evidence, to establish your assault caused injuries, is necessary for you to succeed in your claim I cannot stress how important it is to have a good general practitioner to provide treatment and support to you.

You should cooperate with the prosecution of the offender as a failure to do so may affect your ability to later claim compensation with the Assessor.

Once an offender is charged and dealt with, your claim may be lodged. However strict time limits do apply to criminal injury compensation claims and you should consult a legal practitioner with experience in personal injuries as soon as possible.

I have a particular interest in assisting the victims of crime to receive the maximum compensation for their injuries.
